# How To Add Multiple Contacts To A Project
Some jobs involve more than one person — a husband and wife, a property manager and an owner, a general contractor and a homeowner. Exterio lets you attach multiple contacts to a project and designate which one is primary.
### When you'd use it
- A spouse needs to be reachable on the job as well
- A property manager is the day-to-day contact but the owner signs
- The wrong person was set as primary when the project was created
### Before you start
**A project always has to have at least one contact.** You can add and swap contacts, but you can't leave a project with none.
### Adding a contact to a project
1. Navigate to the project page.
2. Click the **three dots** in the top right corner and click **Edit**.
3. Scroll to the bottom to see the current project contacts.
4. Search for the contact in your CRM and click to add them to the project.
5. Click **Save**.
### Changing the primary contact
While in the same edit view, click the **star icon** next to the contact you want as primary. Save.

### Where additional contacts appear
After saving, the project header shows the primary contact by name, with a **+1** icon (or +2, +3, depending on how many additional contacts there are). Click it to access those contacts' information.
### Tips and gotchas
- **The contact has to exist before you can add them.** This step searches your existing CRM — it doesn't create new contacts. If the person isn't in your database yet, create them first. See *How to Create a Contact*.
- **Primary contact drives your communication.** Automated messages and the default outreach path follow the primary contact. If the property manager is who you actually deal with day to day, make them primary — don't just add them and assume the team will figure it out.
- **Adding a contact is not the same as making them primary.** Two separate actions. Adding puts them on the project; the star makes them primary. If you meant to swap who's in charge, make sure you clicked the star.
- **Consent is per contact.** Adding someone to a project doesn't give you permission to text them. Each contact carries their own SMS and email consent. See *How to Edit a Contact*.
- **Add the second contact early.** The most common version of this ticket is a spouse calling in annoyed that they weren't kept in the loop. Adding them at the start costs ten seconds.
