# Setup: Project Work Types

## Work types are the trades and services your company offers, like roofing, siding, windows, doors and gutters. Every project is tagged with one or more work types, so your team can see what each job is at a glance. Work types also connect to your measurement templates and product packages.

### When would I use this?

- You’re setting up Exterio and want the work types to match the services you sell.
- You’ve started offering a new service, like gutters or decks.
- You want the work types your team picks most often at the top of the list.

### Before you start

- **Only users with Feature Settings access can change work types.** By default, that’s Admins and Managers.
- **Work types affect everyone.** Every user picks from this list when they create a project.
- **Decide how detailed you want to be.** Some companies use one work type per trade, like Roofing. Others split a trade, like Re-Roof and Roof Repair. Fewer work types are easier for your team to pick from.

### How do I open Work Types in Exterio?

Go to **Settings** \> **Feature Settings** \> **Projects** \> **Work Types**.

Each work type shows its color, its name and how many projects use it.

### How do I add a work type?

Click **Add Work Type**, name it, pick a color, and click **Add Work Type**.

1. Click **Add Work Type**.
2. Enter a **Name**, like “Siding” or “Decks.”
3. Add a short **Description** if it helps your team know when to use it.
4. Pick a **Color**. The color helps your team tell work types apart at a glance.
5. Click **Add Work Type**.

The new work type shows up in the list right away, ready to use on projects.

### How do I rename a work type or change its color?

Click the pencil on the work type, make your changes, and click **Save Changes**.

Renaming a work type updates it on every project that uses it.

### How do I change the order of work types?

Drag a work type by its handle on the left to a new spot. Work types show in this order wherever your team picks them, so put the ones you use most at the top.

### How do I turn off a work type I don’t use anymore?

Turn off the switch next to the work type.

A turned-off work type doesn’t appear when your team creates a project. Projects that already use it keep it. Turn the switch back on any time to bring it back.

### How do I delete a work type?

Click the delete icon on the work type, then confirm.

You can only delete a work type that no projects use. If any project uses it, the delete icon is grayed out. Turn the work type off instead.

| **What you want** | **What to do** |
| --- | --- |
| Stop using a work type, but keep it on old projects | Turn off its switch |
| Remove a work type that was added by mistake and never used | Delete it |
| Fix a typo or change the name | Click the pencil and rename it |

### Where are work types used?

| **Where** | **How work types are used** |
| --- | --- |
| **Projects** | Each project is tagged with one or more work types, like Roofing and Gutters |
| **Measurement templates** | Each measurement template belongs to a work type, like a Siding template for siding jobs |
| **Product packages** | Each package is tagged with the work types it’s for, like a gutter package for Gutters |
| **Lead forms** | A lead form can ask visitors which services they’re interested in. See “Setup: Create and Edit a Lead Form” |

### Tips and gotchas

- **Set up work types before measurement templates and packages.** Templates and packages are tied to work types, so it’s easiest to have your list ready first.
- **Turn off, don’t delete.** Turning a work type off hides it from new projects but keeps your history, so reports on past jobs still make sense.
- **Keep the list short.** If your team has to choose between “Re-Roof,” “Re-Roof Comp,” “Reroof” and “Roof Replacement,” some will pick the wrong one and your reports get split up. One clear name per service works best.
- **Use a project with more than one work type for combined jobs.** If you’re doing a roof and gutters on the same house, tag the project with both work types instead of creating a “Roof + Gutters” work type.
- **Use the description to set the rules.** A short note like “Full tear-off and replacement. Use Roof Repair for anything under 5 squares” helps your team pick the right one every time.
